As a follow-up to the Center’s cybersecurity forum, the Meyner Center alerts state and local government officials that hackers and hacktivists have increased their attacks on state and local government computers. Hacktivists are political activists who attack state and local government computers allegedly to make a point or advocate for a cause. For example, hackers attacked Michigan’s website to protest the Flint water crisis. Police shootings of black men have triggered attacks on municipal computer systems. It is vital for governments to install adequate protections and train personnel on how to spot, stop, and avoid hacking attacks. Posted January 19, 2017.
